2038 Hours

July 8, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

31 projects. 130 Panthers. 2038 total hours.

The Lake City High School Athletic Department capped off the 2015-16 school year with a community cleanup walk from Main Street Elementary to the Lake City High School campus. 66 students, 11 coaches, and 1 LCHS administrator gave up their Memorial Day weekend Saturday morning to take part in showing some hometown pride. The event also gave the athletic department 2038 cumulative hours of community service for the year.

“I always tell people that we have incredible kids at Lake City High School,” said Lake City High School Athletic Director Matt Apicella. “These kids only need direction and the opportunity to do great things and this school year proved just how much they love this community. I am beyond proud of them.”

The participants celebrated their achievement with a lunch of grilled leg quarters, chicken perlo, and green beans provided by the LCHS Athletic Department.

Special thanks to the Lake City Fire Department for supplying the bags and equipment today. Also, thanks to Mr. Martin Cooper and Coach Kevin Graham for handling all of the grill work.

NAU Student-Athletes and Staff Make a Commitment to Community Service

July 8, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University Athletics Department has once again made community service a vital part of the Lumberjack experience. NAU student-athletes and staff continue to make their imprint in the Flagstaff community and beyond as the athletes have performed a record 5,428 hours of total community service hours breaking last year’s mark of 5,327. In addition, the Lumberjack staff registered 1,115 community service hours to make it a department-wide effort.

“Taking time to give back to Flagstaff and beyond is a priority for NAU Athletics administrators, coaches and student-athletes,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Lisa Campos. “It is a way to say thank you for the support we receive from the community, and an opportunity for us to help make a positive impact. We continually look for ways to ‘Inspire Northern Arizona’ and I am proud of the many hours our program has committed to this endeavor.”

NAU’s commitment to giving back has continually increased every year as the total amount of community service hours since the 2011-12 school year has grown by nearly 2,000 hours.

The Lumberjacks won a total of seven conference championships this year, proving that they are winners in competition and in the community. Every year NAU student-athletes participate in Welcome Back Jacks; as they help incoming freshmen move into the dorms. It doesn’t end there as community service projects stretch from Red Ribbon Week, to Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Student-Athlete for a Day was another success, while the Lumberjacks got the Flagstaff United School District heavily involved with the athletics department for various events in the school’s and on the NAU campus.

Jordan Denesik from the women’s tennis team and Caleb Hoover from the men’s cross country and track & field programs were voted this year’s Jacks That Give Back.

Denesik, a senior from Anthem, Ariz., completed over 152 hours of community service including work outside the department volunteering with Kinsey Elementary, Knoles Assembly, Welcome Back Jacks, Red Ribbon Week, Trick-Or-Treat at the Dome, Toys For Tots, MLK Jr. Day of Service, and many other services.

Caleb Hoover, a senior from Joplin, Mo., performed over 31 hours of service in the community including assisting with MLK Jr. Day of Service, Cub Scout Field Day, Glory Field Ministry, and the Flagstaff Family Food Center.

Stacy Silver “gives” her all both on and off the court

July 7, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

MOREHEAD, Ky. – If there is one word to describe Stacy Silver’s time at Morehead State it is this: joy.

A joy to be a libero (defensive specialist) for the Eagles’ volleyball team.

A joy to be headed into her final semester before receiving a degree in exercise science.

And a joy to be of service in the Morehead community.

Her 90-plus hours of community service were a big reason why the volleyball team won the Team Community Service Award at the Morehead State Athletics Honors Banquet. The award goes to the team with the most combined community service hours, and volleyball topped the list with 510 hours.

Silver, a 5-foot-6 senior from Brownsburg, Ind., put in nearly all her hours at Morehead’s community soup kitchen.

She estimated that as many as 250 people are served on busier days. And the fare is much more than merely soup.

Besides a main entrée, typical meals include two sides, rolls and a dessert.

Silver volunteered in the kitchen last summer. Once the fall volleyball season opened, she worked Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rising at 6 a.m., she normally would be on duty from 6:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m.

From there, she would go to class and then to volleyball practice before finishing her day with schoolwork.

Did we mention that Silver has had a 4.0 grade-point average every semester at Morehead State?

“Stacy’s a very driven and exceptional woman and she has an incredible heart,” said head coach Jaime Gordon. “She does a lot to reach out to others. Her involvement, especially over at the soup kitchen, is quite commendable and she’s really been incredibly dedicated to that.”

Silver’s duties range from preparing food, serving and keeping everything clean.

“It’s a really neat place,” she said. “It brings me a lot of joy, and it brings me a lot of joy to help others and see – even though it’s a lot of work each morning – to see that people are getting fed.”

The kitchen, athletics and studies combine to demand a disciplined lifestyle.

“I’ve learned time management, for sure,” Silver said. “I don’t get to watch TV that much or whatnot, but the way I see it is I’m there to support my teammates by working hard on the court, in the classroom. And, then, I also want to give back to the community. Not going out or not watching TV, it doesn’t bother me because I’d rather do something that’s beneficial.”

Gordon says that Silver epitomizes the type of players he wants to recruit – individuals who are driven to excel on the court, in the classroom and in the community. Her commitment to public service serves as an inspiration to her teammates and encourages them to be similarly involved. And that’s partly how the Team Community Service Award wound up with the volleyball team.

“It’s something that is, I think, just a reflection of the type of people that they are,” Gordon said. “They’re very selfless and are constantly focused on others. I think it’s a real attribute.

“And especially considering all the rest of the teams and student-athletes. This is something that not just our team, but the whole athletic department embraces. So I think it makes it even a little bit more special that we were recognized, considering the other teams and their commitments as well.”

Senate Members Raise Money and Awareness

July 5, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Glen Cove High School’s Student Senate, under the guidance of adviser Ellen Lynch, sponsored a team for the Relay for Life hosted at North Shore High School.
One of the team’s fundraisers was to tape Glen Cove High School Assistant Principal Allen Hudson to a wall, which assisted them in raising $200 in approximately 45 minutes! During the Relay, the students played games, including kickball. They also got up on stage to sing karaoke and participated in a scavenger hunt.
